Very prescient David! I put it down to Civil service capture. Whilst a huge proportion of DESNZ’s annual taxpayer’s budget is spent on nuclear, then “nuclear must continue”, irrespective of the merits of alternatives…

Hi David. A very interesting article. Here at STAND (Severnside Together Against Nuclear Development) we have been fighting SMR's ever since they were mooted. And share your disappointment at the new Labour Govt. In 2022 David Milliband said on TV that new nuclear development was wrong as it took resources away from renewables. The link to that can be found on our website https://www.nuclearsevernside.co.uk where you can read about our anti-nuclear power fight since the 1980's.

Thanks for pointing that out. There's certainly a clear competition for funds in GB Energy, More of the (GB Energy) budget for SMRs obviously means less for renewables! Ed Miliband is a very clever guy and very knowledgeable about energy technologies, so I do wonder what is going on here!

As you say, a clever guy, and one I admire generally. Perhaps what's going on is the realisation that a) the TUC is very pro-nuclear power, and b) nuclear power is needed to provide weapons grade material for nuclear weapons, here and in the USA. We have a long and documented history of supplying plutonium to the USA. Only a few weeks ago a ship held up in the Panama canal due to a drought, that was on route from the UK to the west coast of USA, was believed to be carrying weapons grade plutonium.
